Titanium dioxide-coated biochar composites as adsorptive and photocatalytic degradation materials for the removal of aqueous organic pollutants

BACKGROUND: This article reports the synthesis and characterisation of titanium dioxide-coated biochar composites (TBCs) by pyrolysing titanium dioxide-treated biomass prepared by a modified sol–gel method. Their adsorptive and photocatalytic activities were evaluated based on the removal of safranine T (ST) from an aqueous solution with/without UV-light irradiation. RESULTS: Characterisation studies suggested that TiO<inf>2</inf>was successfully loaded on the biochar substrate. The biochar and TiO<inf>2</inf>contents of the composite significantly affected its performance. The ST removal capabilities of the TBCs with 1, 1.5, 2, and 2.5 g of the biomass are 1.7, 2.3, 7.2, and 2.3 times better than that of the raw biochar, respectively. Thus, the optimum amount of biomass in TBC-x was determined to be 2 g, with the corresponding sample exhibiting excellent stability, effectiveness over a wide pH range, and a maximum ST removal capacity of 226.7 mg g<sup>-1</sup>. CONCLUSION: The loading of TiO<inf>2</inf>significantly enhanced the adsorption performance of biochar and the high specific surface area of the biochar synergistically promoted the photocatalytic activity of TiO<inf>2</inf>. Both adsorption and photocatalytic degradation were confirmed to contribute to the decolourisation of the aqueous solution because of the removal of ST, with the effect of adsorption being slightly higher than that of photocatalysis. BACKGROUD: In this work, graphene oxide (GO) was synthesized followed by a modified Hummers method and several characterization techniques were provided. Its adsorptive activity was evaluated based on the removal of Cu(II) from an aqueous solution. External influences were taken into account to further study the adsorption mechanism. RESULT: Characterization results revealed that GO was well prepared and a large amount of oxygen-containing functional groups were introduced. The Cu(II) adsorption increased with increasing solution pH and precipitate at alkaline conditions. NaCl concentration improved copper adsorption at low pH. Formate reduced copper adsorption while benzoate improved the adsorption under low pH conditions. CONCLUSIONS: Here, GO performed Cu(II) adsorption well. The external conditions have different influences on the adsorption process. Experimental results demonstrate that GO is a promising alternative material for pollutants removal. ©2018 Society of Chemical Industry.<br/> ©2018 Society of Chemical Industry

摘要:
Due to the widespread application of white-rot fungi for the treatment of pollutants, it's crucial to exploit the special effects of pollutants on the microbes. Here, we studied the effects of cadmium on calcium homeostasis in the most studied white-rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium. The response of P. chrysosporium to cadmium stress is concentration-dependent. A high concentration of cadmium caused the release of calcium from P. chrysosporium, while a hormesis effect was observed at a lower cadmium concentration (10 μM), which resulted in a significant increase in calcium uptake and reversed the decrease in cell viability. Calcium (50 μM) promoted cell viability (127.2% of control), which reflects that calcium can protect P. chrysosporium from environmental stress. Real-time changes in the Ca 2+ and Cd 2+ fluxes of P. chrysosporium were quantified using the noninvasive microtest technique. Ca 2+ influx decreased significantly under cadmium exposure, and the Ca 2+ channel was involved in Ca 2+ and Cd 2+ influx. The cadmium and/or calcium uptake results coupled with the real-time Ca 2+ and Cd 2+ influxes microscale signatures can enhance our knowledge of the homeostasis of P. chrysosporium with respect to cadmium stress, which may provide useful information for improving the bioremediation process. © 2018 Elsevier Inc.

摘要:
In this research, adsorption of two estrogens, namely, 17β-estradiol (E2) and 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2), by graphene nanosheets with different reduction degrees (rGOs) were investigated; and the effects of solution chemistry, such as natural organic matter (NOM), pH and ionic strength (IS), on the E2 and EE2 adsorption behaviors were also examined. Results indicated that adsorption abilities of estrogens increased with increasing the reduction degree of rGOs; the π–π stacking interaction could be considered as a predominant interaction to the enhanced adsorption capacities of rGOs. Among the solution chemistry, NOM exhibited the significant influence on estrogens adsorption, which suggested that once released into water environments, graphene materials will adsorb estrogens but with a lower adsorption ability than that in ultrapure water due to the ubiquitous presence of NOM in aquatic environments. Besides, estrogens adsorption on rGOs was pH-dependent, but the influence of acid rain would be insignificant due to slight change in low pH range. However, IS within the typical range in natural waters did not exhibit significant influence on the uptake of estrogens by rGOs. Above findings of this work might have significant implications for the fate and transport of estrogens with graphene materials in the environment. © 2017

BACKGROUND: In this study, a graphene oxide@TiO<inf>2</inf>composite (GO/TiO<inf>2</inf>) was prepared and characterized by SEM, EDX, XRD, nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherm, and XPS. Photocatalytic reduction and removal of Cr(VI) using this composite in an aerobic atmosphere were studied under UV irradiation. The effects of pH, ferric ions, inorganic anions, and formate were investigated systematically. RESULTS: The Cr(VI) reduction rate decreased with increasing solution pH. The presence of ferric ions in the system improved the photocatalytic reduction process. The effects of SO<inf>4</inf><sup>2−</sup>and PO<inf>4</inf><sup>3−</sup>on the process were higher than those of Cl<sup>−</sup>and NO<inf>3</inf><sup>−</sup>. Formate slightly inhibited adsorption of Cr(VI), while it improved Cr(VI) reduction. GO/TiO<inf>2</inf>has good stability and it maintained full photoreduction activity for at least three cycles. CONCLUSION: The results indicated that GO/TiO<inf>2</inf>can thermodynamically reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III) under UV light. Environmental conditions and wastewater characteristics (e.g. pH, ferric ions, inorganic anions, and formate) can influence the decontamination process because they affect the interactions between chromium ions and GO/TiO<inf>2</inf>and alter the electron-transfer pathways. The results suggest that the GO/TiO<inf>2</inf>is an attractive material for removing hexavalent chromium from water using a photocatalytic process. ©2018 Society of Chemical Industry.<br/> ©2018 Society of Chemical Industry

A readily separated composite was prepared via direct assembly of Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles onto the surface of graphene oxide (GO) (labeled as Fe3O4@GO) and used as an adsorbent for the removal of tetracycline (TC) from wastewater. The effects of external environmental conditions, such as pH, ionic strength, humic acid (HA), TC concentration, and temperature, on the adsorption process were studied. The adsorption data were analyzed by kinetics and isothermal models. The results show that the Fe3O4@GO composite has excellent sorptive properties and can efficiently remove TC. At low pH, the adsorption capacity of Fe3O4@GO toward TC decreases slowly with increasing pH value, while the adsorption capacity decreases rapidly at higher pH values. The ionic strength has insignificant effect on TC adsorption. The presence of HA affects the affinity of Fe3O4@GO to TC. The pseudo-second-order kinetics model and Langmuir model fit the adsorption data well. When the initial concentration of TC is 100 mg/L, a slow adsorption process dominates. Film diffusion is the rate limiting step of the adsorption. Importantly, Fe3O4@GO has good regeneration performance. The above results are of great significance to promote the application of Fe3O4@GO in the treatment of antibiotic wastewater. © 2017 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

Thiourea-dioxide–reduced magnetic graphene oxide (TDMGO) was successfully prepared as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of tetracycline (TC) from aqueous solutions via strong adsorptive interactions. The composite was characterized by SEM, TEM, EDS, TGA, FT-IR, XPS, XRD and VSM. The effects of variables such as the pH, TC concentration, and temperature were successfully analyzed. The kinetics and isothermal parameters were described well by pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm models, respectively, and the maximum adsorption capacity (qm) of TDMGO for TC calculated from the Langmuir isotherm was 1233 mg/g at 313 K. The removal of TC onto TDMGO, as indicated by the thermodynamic parameters, was spontaneous and endothermic. The removal performance was slightly affected by the solution pH. The presence of NaCl in the solution facilitated TC adsorption, and the optimum adsorption capacity was obtained when the NaCl concentration was >0.001 M. The adsorption capacity decreased slightly with increasing humic acid concentration. In addition, the adsorbent could be regenerated and reused. Based on these results, TDMGO is a promising adsorbent for the efficient removal of TC antibiotics from aquatic environments for pollution treatment.

Adsorption of two estrogen contaminants (17β-estradiol and 17α-ethynyl estradiol) by graphene nanomaterials was investigated and compared to those of a multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT), a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT), two biochars, a powdered activated carbon (PAC), and a granular activate carbon (GAC) in ultrapure water and in the competition of natural organic matter (NOM). Graphene nanomaterials showed comparable or better adsorption ability than carbon nanotubes (CNTs), biochars (BCs), and activated carbon (ACs) under NOM preloading. The competition of NOM decreased the estrogen adsorption by all adsorbents. However, the impact of NOM on the estrogen adsorption was smaller on graphenes than CNTs, BCs, and ACs. Moreover, the hydrophobicity of estrogens also affected the uptake of estrogens. These results suggested that graphene nanomaterials could be used to removal estrogen contaminants from water as an alternative adsorbent. Nevertheless, if transferred to the environment, they would also adsorb estrogen contaminants, leading to great environmental hazards. © 2017 American Chemical Society.

摘要:
The presence of cyanotoxins in different water sources, originating from cyanobacterial algal blooms, is a ubiquitous, global concern. Microcystins (MCs) are the most commonly occurring class of cyanbacterial toxin, and are characterized as cyclic heptapeptides containing five D-amino acids and two variable L-amino acids. Over 100 MC variants exist, and microcystin-LR (MC-LR) is one of the most hazardous and prevalent. Removing MC-LR from aqueous solutions by titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalysis has been proposed as a possible solution for this. Both metal and non-metal doped TiO2 photocatalysts have been investigated over recent decades for their MC-LR photocatalytic degradation properties under visible light. This review provides an overview of visible light-activated TiO2 synthesis technologies, and structural and electronical properties. The photocatalytic behavior of visible light-activated TiO2 for the photodegradation of MC-LR is discussed. The structural elucidation of reaction intermediates of the degradation pathways, and the mechanisms of MC-LR degradation by visible-light activated TiO2 in comparison with conventional UV-activated TiO2, is given particular emphasis. We also aimed to identify research gaps and uncertainties that exist for the use of visible light-activated TiO2 in photocatalysis. Additional research requirements for visible light-activated TiO2 photocatalysts and potential areas for future applications of doped TiO2 photocatalysts under visible light are also proposed.

摘要:
A novel adsorbent, namely, beta-cyclodextrin/poly (L-glutamic acid) supported magnetic graphene oxide (CGMG), was synthesized through a facile chemical route and its application as excellent adsorbent for 17 beta-estradiol (E2) removal from aqueous solution was also demonstrated. The characteristics of CGMG were investigated via using Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectra, X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometer and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area, respectively. Results indicated that CGMG was successfully prepared and the saturated magnetization could reach up to 0.09043 emu/mg. Meanwhile, investigation of adsorption behavior illustrated that the adsorption process could be better fitted by the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models. Analysis of intraparticle diffusion model demonstrated that intraparticle diffusion was not the only rate-limiting step; however, both film diffusion and intraparticle diffusion were involved in the diffusion process. Thermodynamic study indicated that adsorption of E2 onto CGMG was spontaneous and endothermic. The E2 uptake by CGMG decreased in high pH values. However, it was insensitive to ionic strength variation (0.0-0.1 M). Moreover, the regeneration experiments illustrated that CGMG could be recovered, and it showed good recycling ability with ca. 88.7% of the initial sorption capacity after being used for sixth cycles. 摘要:
The protective role of spermidine addition in media to Salix matsudana exposed to Pb was investigated by a hydroponic experiment in this study. The application of spermidine enhanced the biomass of S. matsudana exposed to Pb. Pb induced an increase in Pb levels in all organs of S. matsudana with the order of roots (maximum of 27616.0 mg/kg DW) > cuttings > twigs > leaves. Exogenous spermidine promoted the accumulation of Pb in the roots, but inhibited the Pb translocation to the shoots and thus the Pb content in the twigs and leaves. The Pb-induced decrease in the concentrations of spermidine, soluble protein, and nitric oxide was elevated by the application of spermidine in the leaves of S. matsudana. Exogenous spermidine could also effectively up-regulate the antioxidative capacity and reduced the accumulation of superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde, and putrescine. The results suggested that S. matsudana could accumulate a high level of Pb in the roots, and exogenous spermidine could enhance S. matsudana tolerance to Pb by the synergistic promotion of Pb accumulation in the roots and the levels of spermidine, nitric oxide, and antioxidants in the leaves. ©2017 Elsevier B.V.

A biochar supported calcined-Mg/Al layered double hydroxides composite (CLDHs/BC) was synthesized by a one-pot slow pyrolysis of LDHs preloaded bagasse biomass. Multiple characterizations of the product illustrated that the calcined-Mg/Al layered double hydroxides (CLDHs) were successfully coated onto the biochar in slow pyrolysis of pre-treated biomass. The as-synthesized CLDHs/BC could efficiently remove antibiotic tetracycline from aqueous solutions. The coating of CLDHs significantly increased the adsorption ability of biochar, and CLDHs/BC exhibited more than 2 times higher adsorption capacity than that of the pristine biochar (BC) in the tested pH range. The maximum adsorption capacity of CLDHs/BC for tetracycline was 1118.12 mg/g at 318 K. The experimental results suggested that the interaction with LDHs on biochar played a dominant role in tetracycline adsorption, accompanied with π–π interaction and hydrogen bond. This study provides a feasible and simple approach for the preparation of high-performance material for antibiotics contaminated wastewater treatment in a cost-effective way.

This study demonstrates the use of few-layered graphene oxide nanosheets (GO) as efficient adsorbents for the removal of 17β-Estradiol (E2) from aqueous solutions via strong adsorptive interactions. The adsorption performance of GO was investigated by batch adsorption experiments. Further, adsorption experiments were carried out in the presence of other environmental pollutants to understand external influence on the adsorption of E2 by GO. The result indicated that the maximum adsorption capacity (qm) of GO for E2 obtained from the Langmuir isotherm was 149.4mg/g at 298K and it was the highest values of E2 adsorption compared to that of other adsorbents reported before. Thermodynamic study indicated that the adsorption was a spontaneous process. In addition, the result showed that E2 adsorption on GO was slight affected by the solution pH. The presence of NaCl in the solution facilitated the E2 adsorption and the optimum adsorption capacity was obtained when the NaCl concentration was 0.001M. Moreover, the effect of background electrolyte divalent cations (Mg2+ and Ca2+) was not similar with the monovalent cations (Na+ and K+). While the influence of background electrolyte anions (Cl-, NO3-, SO42-, and PO43-) were not significantly different. The presence of humic acid reduced E2 adsorption on GO at pH 7.0. GO still exhibited excellent adsorption capacity following numerous desorption/adsorption cycles. Besides, both π-π interactions and hydrogen bonds might be responsible for the adsorption of E2 onto GO. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.

Aquatic macrophytes are considered to be promising in controlling harmful cyanobacterial blooms. In this research, an aqueous extract of Sagittaria trifolia tubers was prepared to study its inhibitory effect on Microcystis aeruginosa in the laboratory. Several physiological indices of M. aeruginosa, in response to the environmental stress, were analyzed. Results showed that S. trifolia tuber aqueous extract significantly inhibited the growth of M. aeruginosa in a concentration-dependent way. The highest inhibition rate reached 90% after 6 day treatment. The Chlorophyll-a concentration of M. aeruginosa cells decreased from 343.1 to314.2 μg/L in the treatment group. The activities of superoxide dismutase and peroxidase and the content of reduced glutathione in M. aeruginosa cells initially increased as a response to the oxidative stress posed by S. trifolia tuber aqueous extract, but then decreased as time prolonged. The lipid peroxidation damage of the cyanobacterial cell membranes was reflected by the malondialdehyde level, which was notably higher in the treatment group compared with the controls. It was concluded that the oxidative damage of M. aeruginosa induced by S.trifolia tuber aqueous extract might be one of the mechanisms for the inhibitory effects.

To investigate the relationship between Cr(VI) adsorption mechanisms and physio-chemical properties of biochar, ramie residues were oxygen-limited pyrolyzed under temperature varying from 300 to 600 °C. Batch adsorption experiments indicated that higher pyrolysis temperature limits Cr(VI) sorption in terms of capacity and affinity due to a higher aromatic structure and fewer polar functional groups in biochar. Both electrostatic (physical) and ionic (chemical) interactions were involved in the Cr(VI) removal. For low-temperature biochar, the simple physical adsorption was limited and the significant improvement in Cr(VI) sorption was attributed to abundant carboxyl and hydroxyl groups. The adsorption-reduction mechanisms could be concluded that Cr(VI) ions were electrostatically attracted by the positively charged biochar surface and reduced to Cr(III), and then the converted Cr(III) was retained or discharged into the solution. The study demonstrates ramie residues can be converted into biochar as a low-cost and effective sorbent for Cr(VI) removal. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd.

A Cd-tolerant plant species named Boehmeria nivea (L.) Gaudich (ramie) was applied to study its Cd accumulation and translocation mechanisms with the addition of ethylene diamine tetracetic acid (EDTA) or nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA). A pot experiment was designed to systematically investigate the Cd accumulation and subcellular compartmentation in different ramie tissues as well as soil Cd solubility and its physiological response. Results showed that soil EDTA- and NTA-extractable Cd concentrations were remarkably higher than the control, and Cd content in each tissue with Cd translocation factor (TF) after EDTA and NTA addition were significantly increased with elevated chelant concentration. In spite of the decreased cytoderm Cd contents in different tissues, extracellular and intracellular Cd content were increased dramatically under chelant treatment, particularly in ramie leaves with EDTA addition from 2 mmol kg<sup>-1</sup>to 10 mmol kg<sup>-1</sup>(increased by 98% for extracellular Cd and by 29% for intracellular Cd, respectively). Furthermore, the addition of chelant also resulted in an apparent increase of malondialdehyde (MDA) content and decrease of chlorophyll level in ramie leaves. These results revealed that EDTA and NTA could enhance Cd phytoavailability in soil, facilitate apoplastic and symplastic transport of Cd from root to the aboveground tissues and improve leaf Cd accumulation, which may because of the extracellular loading among spongy tissues and intracellular sequestration in mesophyll vacuoles. This study contributes to the control of Cd accumulation by plants. ©The Royal Society of Chemistry 2015.

Cadmium (Cd) is present in soil and water at low concentrations that can be harmful to the biota. A Cd-tolerant plant species named ramie (Boehmeria nivea (L.) Gaudich) was applied to probe the precise Cd tolerance mechanism with different treatment duration and the up-regulation effect for antioxidant capacity by spermidine (Spd) pretreatment. The results showed that short-term (0-7 d) Cd stress resulted in the enhancement of pigment content, the accumulation of soluble sugar and the activation of partial antioxidants, meanwhile reducing the level of malondialdehyde (MDA), which is the indicator of oxidative stress. Spd pretreatment markedly increased the soluble protein, soluble sugar and reduced glutathione (GSH) content in ramie leaves under short-term Cd stress, whereas, it showed no significantly beneficial effects on photosynthesis and other antioxidants. Long-term (0-15 d) Cd stress may lead to growth inhibition which is associated with Cd accumulation, protein oxidation, sugar degradation, MDA surge and antioxidant inactivation. Spd application markedly alleviated long-term Cd toxicity by decreasing Cd accumulation, stabilizing cellular macromolecules such as pigments, soluble protein and sugar and inhibiting peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT) and malate dehydrogenase (MDH) inactivation and GSH degradation. Our present work concluded that ramie could tolerate moderate Cd stress during a certain time span. Spd application could play a vital role in the promotion of Cd tolerance by adjusting different kinds of parameters. ©The Royal Society of Chemistry 2015.

摘要:
The amendment effects of biochar on total microbial activity was measured by fluorescein diacetate (FDA) hydrolytic activity, and phytotoxicity in Pb(II)-contaminated soils was examined by the application of 4 different biochars to soil, with rice as a test plant. The FDA hydrolytic activities of biochar-amended soils were much higher than that of the control. The survival rate of rice in lead-contaminated biochar-amended soils showed significant improvement over the control, especially for bamboo biochar-amended soil (93.3%). In addition, rice grown in lead-contaminated control sediment displayed lower biomass production than that in biochar-amended soil. The immobilization of Pb(II) and the positive effects of biochar amendment on soil microorganisms may account for these effects. The results suggest that biochar may have an excellent ability to mitigate the toxic effects of Pb(II) on soil microorganisms and rice. © 2015 SETAC.

摘要:
Novel membrane of inorganic-polymer hybrid membrane was prepared by incorporation of the nano-TiO2 into regenerated cellulose (RC). The resulting membrane was characterized by AFM, SEM, and XRD. TiO2 particles formed on the surface and in the interior of the hybrid membrane due to the TiO2 conglomeration, and the surface roughness of the hybrid membrane increased linearly with increasing TiO2 content. The membrane was tested for their ability to separate caprolactam-water mixtures by pervaporation. Among all the prepared membranes, RC-TiO2 inorganic-polymer hybrid membrane containing 5 wt.% TiO2 exhibited the good pervaporation performance with a flux of 1787.3 g m-2 h -1 and separation factor of 55091.7 at 328 K for 50 wt.% caprolactam. Besides, the normalized permeation fluxes in terms of water permeance, caprolactam permeance and selectivity were also introduced to evaluate the membranes performance.
