Removal of 17β-estradiol by few-layered graphene oxide nanosheets from aqueous solutions: External influence and adsorption mechanism

This study demonstrates the use of few-layered graphene oxide nanosheets (GO) as efficient adsorbents for the removal of 17β-Estradiol (E2) from aqueous solutions via strong adsorptive interactions. The adsorption performance of GO was investigated by batch adsorption experiments. Further, adsorption experiments were carried out in the presence of other environmental pollutants to understand external influence on the adsorption of E2 by GO. The result indicated that the maximum adsorption capacity (qm) of GO for E2 obtained from the Langmuir isotherm was 149.4mg/g at 298K and it was the highest values of E2 adsorption compared to that of other adsorbents reported before. Thermodynamic study indicated that the adsorption was a spontaneous process. In addition, the result showed that E2 adsorption on GO was slight affected by the solution pH. The presence of NaCl in the solution facilitated the E2 adsorption and the optimum adsorption capacity was obtained when the NaCl concentration was 0.001M. Moreover, the effect of background electrolyte divalent cations (Mg2+ and Ca2+) was not similar with the monovalent cations (Na+ and K+). While the influence of background electrolyte anions (Cl-, NO3-, SO42-, and PO43-) were not significantly different. The presence of humic acid reduced E2 adsorption on GO at pH 7.0. GO still exhibited excellent adsorption capacity following numerous desorption/adsorption cycles. Besides, both π-π interactions and hydrogen bonds might be responsible for the adsorption of E2 onto GO. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.

A nitrogen–doped magnetic graphene oxide (NMGO) was synthesized and applied as an adsorbent to remove Cu(II) and Cr(VI) ions from aqueous solutions. The individual and combined effects of various factors (A: pH, B: temperature, C: initial concentration of metal ions, D: CaCl2, and E: humic acid [HA]) on the adsorption were analyzed by a 25−1 fractional factorial design (FFD). The results from this study indicated that the NMGO had higher adsorption capacities for Cu(II) ions than for Cr(VI) ions under most conditions, and the five selected variables affected the two adsorption processes to different extents. A, AC, and C were the very important factors and interactions for Cu(II) adsorption. For Cr(VI) adsorption, A, B, C, AB, and BC were found to be very important influencing variables. The solution pH (A) was the most important influencing factor for removal of both the ions. The main effects of A–E on the removal of Cu(II) were positive. For Cr(VI) adsorption, the main effects of A and D were negative, while B, C, and E were observed to have positive effects. The maximum adsorption capacities for Cu(II) and Cr(VI) ions over NMGO were 146.365 and 72.978 mg/g, respectively, under optimal process conditions.

摘要:
Aquatic macrophytes are considered to be promising in controlling harmful cyanobacterial blooms. In this research, an aqueous extract of Sagittaria trifolia tubers was prepared to study its inhibitory effect on Microcystis aeruginosa in the laboratory. Several physiological indices of M. aeruginosa, in response to the environmental stress, were analyzed. Results showed that S. trifolia tuber aqueous extract significantly inhibited the growth of M. aeruginosa in a concentration-dependent way. The highest inhibition rate reached 90% after 6 day treatment. The Chlorophyll-a concentration of M. aeruginosa cells decreased from 343.1 to314.2 μg/L in the treatment group. The activities of superoxide dismutase and peroxidase and the content of reduced glutathione in M. aeruginosa cells initially increased as a response to the oxidative stress posed by S. trifolia tuber aqueous extract, but then decreased as time prolonged. The lipid peroxidation damage of the cyanobacterial cell membranes was reflected by the malondialdehyde level, which was notably higher in the treatment group compared with the controls. It was concluded that the oxidative damage of M. aeruginosa induced by S.trifolia tuber aqueous extract might be one of the mechanisms for the inhibitory effects.

A novel biochar/MgAl-layered double hydroxides composite (CB-LDH) was prepared for the removal of crystal violet from aqueous solution by pyrolyzing MgAI-LDH pre-coated ramie stem (Boehmeria nivea (L.) Gaud.). Pyrolysis played dual role for both converting biomass into biochar and calcining MgAl-LDH during the pyrolysis process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and zeta potential analysis were used to characterize the CB-LDH. The results of characterization suggested that the calcined LDH was successfully synthesized and coated on biochar. The resulted CB-LDH had higher total pore volume and more functional groups than the pristine biochar. Adsorption experimental data fitted well with the pseudo-second order kinetics model and the Freundlich isotherm model. The rate-controlled step was controlled by film-diffusion initially and then followed by intra-particle diffusion. Thermodynamic analysis showed that the adsorption of crystal violet was a spontaneous and endothermic process. The higher pH and temperature of the solution enhanced the adsorption performance.. CB-LDH could also have excellent ability for the removal of crystal violet from the actual industrial wastewater and groundwater with high ionic strength. LDH adsorption, electrostatic attraction, pore-filling, pi-pi ir interaction and hydrogen bond might be the main mechanisms for crystal violet adsorption on CB-LDH. The results of this study indicated that CB-LDH is a sustainable and green adsorbent with high performance for crystal violet contaminated wastewater treatment and groundwater remediation. To investigate the relationship between Cr(VI) adsorption mechanisms and physio-chemical properties of biochar, ramie residues were oxygen-limited pyrolyzed under temperature varying from 300 to 600 °C. Batch adsorption experiments indicated that higher pyrolysis temperature limits Cr(VI) sorption in terms of capacity and affinity due to a higher aromatic structure and fewer polar functional groups in biochar. Both electrostatic (physical) and ionic (chemical) interactions were involved in the Cr(VI) removal. For low-temperature biochar, the simple physical adsorption was limited and the significant improvement in Cr(VI) sorption was attributed to abundant carboxyl and hydroxyl groups. The adsorption-reduction mechanisms could be concluded that Cr(VI) ions were electrostatically attracted by the positively charged biochar surface and reduced to Cr(III), and then the converted Cr(III) was retained or discharged into the solution. The study demonstrates ramie residues can be converted into biochar as a low-cost and effective sorbent for Cr(VI) removal. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd.

A Cd-tolerant plant species named Boehmeria nivea (L.) Gaudich (ramie) was applied to study its Cd accumulation and translocation mechanisms with the addition of ethylene diamine tetracetic acid (EDTA) or nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA). A pot experiment was designed to systematically investigate the Cd accumulation and subcellular compartmentation in different ramie tissues as well as soil Cd solubility and its physiological response. Results showed that soil EDTA- and NTA-extractable Cd concentrations were remarkably higher than the control, and Cd content in each tissue with Cd translocation factor (TF) after EDTA and NTA addition were significantly increased with elevated chelant concentration. In spite of the decreased cytoderm Cd contents in different tissues, extracellular and intracellular Cd content were increased dramatically under chelant treatment, particularly in ramie leaves with EDTA addition from 2 mmol kg<sup>-1</sup>to 10 mmol kg<sup>-1</sup>(increased by 98% for extracellular Cd and by 29% for intracellular Cd, respectively). Furthermore, the addition of chelant also resulted in an apparent increase of malondialdehyde (MDA) content and decrease of chlorophyll level in ramie leaves. These results revealed that EDTA and NTA could enhance Cd phytoavailability in soil, facilitate apoplastic and symplastic transport of Cd from root to the aboveground tissues and improve leaf Cd accumulation, which may because of the extracellular loading among spongy tissues and intracellular sequestration in mesophyll vacuoles. This study contributes to the control of Cd accumulation by plants. ©The Royal Society of Chemistry 2015.

Cadmium (Cd) is present in soil and water at low concentrations that can be harmful to the biota. A Cd-tolerant plant species named ramie (Boehmeria nivea (L.) Gaudich) was applied to probe the precise Cd tolerance mechanism with different treatment duration and the up-regulation effect for antioxidant capacity by spermidine (Spd) pretreatment. The results showed that short-term (0-7 d) Cd stress resulted in the enhancement of pigment content, the accumulation of soluble sugar and the activation of partial antioxidants, meanwhile reducing the level of malondialdehyde (MDA), which is the indicator of oxidative stress. Spd pretreatment markedly increased the soluble protein, soluble sugar and reduced glutathione (GSH) content in ramie leaves under short-term Cd stress, whereas, it showed no significantly beneficial effects on photosynthesis and other antioxidants. Long-term (0-15 d) Cd stress may lead to growth inhibition which is associated with Cd accumulation, protein oxidation, sugar degradation, MDA surge and antioxidant inactivation. Spd application markedly alleviated long-term Cd toxicity by decreasing Cd accumulation, stabilizing cellular macromolecules such as pigments, soluble protein and sugar and inhibiting peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT) and malate dehydrogenase (MDH) inactivation and GSH degradation. Our present work concluded that ramie could tolerate moderate Cd stress during a certain time span. Spd application could play a vital role in the promotion of Cd tolerance by adjusting different kinds of parameters. ©The Royal Society of Chemistry 2015.

The amendment effects of biochar on total microbial activity was measured by fluorescein diacetate (FDA) hydrolytic activity, and phytotoxicity in Pb(II)-contaminated soils was examined by the application of 4 different biochars to soil, with rice as a test plant. The FDA hydrolytic activities of biochar-amended soils were much higher than that of the control. The survival rate of rice in lead-contaminated biochar-amended soils showed significant improvement over the control, especially for bamboo biochar-amended soil (93.3%). In addition, rice grown in lead-contaminated control sediment displayed lower biomass production than that in biochar-amended soil. The immobilization of Pb(II) and the positive effects of biochar amendment on soil microorganisms may account for these effects. The results suggest that biochar may have an excellent ability to mitigate the toxic effects of Pb(II) on soil microorganisms and rice. © 2015 SETAC.
