Adaptive strategies of overwintering adults: Reproductive diapause and mating behavior in a grasshopper, Stenocatantops splendens (Orthoptera: Catantopidae)

摘要:
To understand the adaptive strategies of the overwintering adults of Stenocatantops splendens, the mechanism of maintenance and termination of the reproductive diapause, the variation in mortality between overwintering females and males, and the mating strategy of the males were investigated. The results indicated that the adult reproductive diapause in natural conditions was mainly regulated by photoperiod in the fall - long photoperiods promoted reproductive development and short photoperiods maintained reproductive diapause, and the sensitivity of the overwintering adults to photoperiod was over before the end of the winter. When transferred from natural conditions to controlled laboratory conditions on dates from September through February, pre-oviposition became increasingly shorter with increasingly deferred transfer dates regardless of photoperiod conditions. The adults treated with low temperature for 30 days in September through November had significantly shorter pre-oviposition, suggesting that low temperatures in winter had an important role in the termination of reproductive diapause. The female had a significantly lower supercooling point than the male, which was related to their lower mortality after winter. In addition, observations of wild populations of the species indicated that mating behavior prior to winter and the duration of pre-mating period were not affected by photoperiod; mating and sperm transfer were mostly completed by November. Compared with females only mating before winter, females mating in the spring had shorter life span, longer pre-oviposition, lower hatching rate and laid fewer egg pods while showing no significant difference with regard to ovipositional interval, per pod number of eggs and nymph dry weight. © 2012 The Authors Insect Science. © 2012 Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

摘要:
1. There are numerous data that support the trade-off between flight capability and reproduction in female wing polymorphic insects, but the relationship between wing form and fitness remains poorly investigated in males. 2. In the present study, the development of flight muscle and gonads, spermatophore size, and multiple copulation ability were investigated in both long-winged (LW) and short-winged (SW) males to verify this trade-off, using a wing dimorphic cricket species Velarifictorus aspersus (Walker). 3. The LW males had better-developed wing muscles than the SW males on the day of emergence, and both of them developed wing muscles after emergence, but the peak of weight in SW males was achieved 4 days later than that of the LW males. The accessory glands (AG) of the LW males developed significantly slower than that of the SW males. These results suggest that development and maintenance of flight muscles have a cost on the development of reproductive organs in male V. asperses. 4. The SW males produced significantly heavier spermatophores in a single copulation and mated more often than LW males. This indicates the SW males have a higher mating success than the LW males, thereby increasing their chance of siring offspring. © 2012 The Authors. A new cynipid species, Saphonecrus hupingshanensis Liu, Yang, et Zhu, sp. nov. (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae: Synergini), is described from China. This is the first species of the inquilinous tribe Synergini ever known to have an association with chinquapins (Fagaceae: Castanopsis). The biology and implication to species diversity of Cynipidae in eastern and southeast Asia are discussed.

摘要:
To investigate the seasonal adaptation strategies of Ophraella communa to new habitats, the effects and regulation mechanisms of photoperiod and temperature on the reproductive diapause in a population collected from Changsha, Hunan were examined. Adults showed obvious reproductive diapause, which was regulated by photoperiod and temperature. At 30°C, there was no adult diapause occurring under either long-day or short-day conditions; at 25°C the pre-oviposition period was short and fecundity was high in adult females under L:D 16:8 h, whereas under L:D 12:12 h, a few females entered reproductive diapause; at 20°C under short-day conditions, all female adults entered diapause. The pre-oviposition period was significantly prolonged when the pupae and adults were transferred from long-days to short-days, but the day length influence was not obvious when they were transferred only in the adult stage. However, the fecundity dropped greatly no matter whether the photoperiod shifted to short-days only in the adult stage or whether the shift occurred in both the pupal and adult stage. The fecundity was extremely low when photoperiod shifted from long-days to short-days in both pupal and adult stages. This was an indication that the pupal and adult stages were the photoperiod-sensitive stage for adult reproductive diapause. This was especially true for the photoperiod in the pupal stage, which has a distinctly significant regulative effect on reproductive diapause. Additionally, this article also addresses the reason for different photoperiodic response patterns in reproductive diapause induction between the Changsha strain and the Tsukuba strain (Japan) of O. communa. © 2011 The Authors Journal compilation © Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Fecundity in some insects is affected by mating status. The effect of mating status on the fecundity and total egg production of Teleogryllus emma (Ohmachi et Matsumura) (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) was examined in this study. The results showed that the pre-oviposition period was shorter for amphigonic females than that for virgin females. However, no significant difference in pre-oviposition was found between amphigonic females and those that had mated with a male with either the phallodeum or testes extirpated. There is no difference in adult longevity between the above four groups. The fecundity and total egg production were much higher in amphigonic females than in those controlled under the three non-amphigonic treatments. The females of T. emma that mated with the testes-extirpated males produced more eggs (up to two-fold more) than both the virgin females and those that mated with the phallodeum-extirpated males, but there was no difference between them. The fecundity-enhancing substances transferred from male to female can stimulate the female to produce more eggs, but this stimulation has to occur in collaboration with sperm. © 2010 The Authors Journal compilation © Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

长颚斗蟋具有明显的翅二型现象。比较长颚斗蟋不同翅型成虫的形态差异,结果表明其短翅型成虫除翅已明显退化外,与长翅型成虫并无其他形态差异。为探究环境因素与长颚斗蟋翅型分化的关系,就光周期、温度及密度对其翅型分化的影响进行了研究。结果表明,短光周期会抑制其长翅型的形成,而LD16∶8h的长光周期则促进长翅个体的分化,但非自然条件的长光周期及全明或全暗条件与上述结论并不一致。变化光周期亦会影响其翅型分化,而随着改变光周期的时间及方向的不同,影响作用亦不相同。在孵化后第20天及40天经历光周期的趋长变化会促进其长翅化;而在孵化后第20天经历光周期的趋短变化则会抑制其长翅化,第30天转移却有促进作用。此外,低温(20℃)条件诱导长颚斗蟋短翅化,高温(25℃,30℃)则促进长翅型的分化。单独饲养时,LD12∶12h与LD16∶8h条件下的若虫均羽化为短翅型成虫,当密度增加至2或5头/容器时,成虫的长翅率均明显增加,说明高密度亦是长翅型个体出现的重要诱因。

Morphology, flight muscles, and reproductive development were compared between long-winged (LW) and short-winged (SW) morphs of the cricket Velarifictorus ornatus (Shiraki) (Orthoptera: Gryllidae). There was no difference in body weight and pre-oviposition between the two morphs, but LW individuals had better-developed flight muscles than SW individuals during and after emergence of the adult. The flight muscles at adult emergence represented 11.9% of the total body weight in the LW female and 4.9% in the SW female. In addition, the weight of the flight muscle of LW females increased by 50% during the first 5 days, whereas the flight muscle of the SW variant increased only slightly after adult emergence. The process of oviposition in LW, SW, and de-alated females varied: SW females produced more eggs at the early stage than LW females, but de-alation could shorten the time until the peak of egg laying and caused histolysis of flight muscles of LW females. There was no significant difference in total egg production between the above three groups. In the male, unlike the female, the accessory glands of the two wing morphs enlarged continuously at the same rate. There was no difference between the two wing morphs in the mass of the testes during the first 7 days after adult emergence. © 2010 The Authors. 摘要:
Diapause intensity, threshold temperature and effective temperature of three populations of Teleogryllus emma (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) collected from Jining (35°10′), Sihong (33°46′) and Changsha (27°02′), China, were investigated. The results showed that the diapause intensity for eggs of T. emma was stronger for the Changsha population at lower latitude than for the Sihong and Jining populations at higher latitudes, whereas no significant difference in the egg diapause intensity was found between the Sihong and Jining populations. A latitudinal increase in egg threshold temperature was observed for the Changsha, Sihong, and Jining populations at 12.2°C, 14.0°C, and 14.7°C, respectively, while an inverse trend in egg effective temperatures was observed in the three populations at 240.1, 215.6, and 196.1 day-degrees, respectively. The results revealed distinct geographical clines among local populations of T. emma in several key life history characteristics for the egg stage, including diapause intensity, threshold temperature and effective temperature, suggesting that the species has evolved different life history strategies in accordance with local climate conditions.

摘要:
The effects of temperature on maintenance and termination of embryonic diapause were investigated in Jining (35.4°N, 116.6°E) and Sihong (33.5°N, 118.2°E) strains of the Chinese rice grasshopper, Oxya chinensis Thunberg (Orthoptera: Catantopidae). Eggs of both strains entered diapause when incubated at 30, 25, or 20 °C. Chilling at 8 °C had an evident effect on diapause termination and almost all eggs chilled for 60 days ended diapause development. Chilling of eggs at 8 °C for only 20 days failed to result in any hatching at 20 °C, suggesting that such level of chilling was not enough to induce diapause termination. However, the treatment combining incubation of eggs at 30 °C for varying lengths of time with subsequent incubation to 20 °C had a distinct effect on the completion of diapause of the eggs. The results indicate that there were two temperature optima, that is, low temperature (chilling) and high temperature, for diapause development in this grasshopper species. Incubation of chilled eggs at 20 °C for 5-15 days followed by further incubation at 25 °C reduced termination of diapause significantly compared with the eggs only chilled at 8 °C. Exposure of eggs chilled at 8 °C to a pulse of 25 °C from 1 to 7 days, separated by a 20-day interval at 8 °C, resulted in a decrease in the percentage of successfully hatched eggs as the length of the pulse of 25 °C increased. The results suggest that diapause intensity may be restored at moderately high temperatures. This reversible change in diapause intensity would play an important role in maintaining diapause before winter. © 2009 The Netherlands Entomological Society.

中华稻蝗五地理种群的卵滞育强度及生活史模式变异

为调查中华稻蝗Oxya chinensis的地理适应,自北纬42.3°至20.0°采集了5个地理种群的标本,比较了其子代的卵滞育发生、滞育强度及成虫虫体大小.结果表明:不同的中华稻蝗地理种群显示了不同的光周期和温度反应模式.铁岭、济宁和泗洪种群的滞育不受光周期和温度的影响,滞育率均为100%.南方的长沙和海口种群仅部分卵进入滞育,海口种群在短日条件下的滞育率高于长日条件,卵期温度亦对其滞育有较大的影响,而长沙种群的卵滞育仅受卵期温度的调控.长沙和海口种群的卵滞育强度最弱,其次是铁岭种群,中间纬度的济宁和泗洪种群的滞育强度最高.在北方的一化性种群中,滞育强度随着纬度的降低而增强.成虫的虫体大小因柄息地纬度的变化而呈现复杂的变异,北方种群的虫体大小与栖息地纬度存在显著的负相关关系,而长沙和海口种群的虫体小于济宁和泗洪种群.结果提示中华稻蝗各种群已形成各自的地理适应机制,纬度梯度在其生活史的形成和发育中起着重要的作用.

丝带凤蝶长沙种群的形态特征及生物学特性

通过野外观察和实验室饲养相结合,研究了丝带凤蝶长沙种群的成虫、卵、幼虫以及蛹的形态特征、生活习性及生活史.结果表明;丝带凤蝶长沙种群一年发生6代,自10月中旬至翌年3月以滞育蛹于枯枝落叶中越冬,4月上、中旬越冬代成虫开始羽化,随后产卵.在25℃的条件下,卵、幼虫及蛹的发育历期分别为5.3 d、15.8~16.8 d和9.6~10.4 d;30℃的温度条件下,卵、幼虫及蛹的发育历期分别为4.0 d、12.9~14.6 d和6.5~7.1 d.在短日照条件下部分蛹进入滞育.此外,根据雌雄成虫的翅面特征认为丝带凤蝶长沙种群应属于南方型.

研究了光周期对歧阜异针蟋若虫生长发育的影响.结果表明:25C条件下,歧阜异针蟋若虫发育明显受光周期的影响,长日条件下的若虫发育明显快于短日条件下的若虫发育.当若虫由短日条件转移至长日条件时,能够显著促进若虫的发育,并且转移越早促进效果越明显,而反方向的转移则对若虫发育无明显影响.这表明歧阜异针蟋若虫存在滞育现象,短日条件诱导滞育,长日条件解除滞育,并且低龄若虫对长日条件比较敏感.
