To understand the swelling behavior of cellulose nanofibril (CNF) films, the dimensional variation of untreated and phenol formaldehyde modified CNF (CNF/PF) films soaked in distilled water was examined in situ with microscopic image recording combined with pixel calculation. Results showed that a dramatic thickness increase exhibited in both CNF and CNF/PF films, despite being at different swelling levels. Compared to thickness swelling, however, the width expansion for these films is negligible. Such significant difference in dimensional swelling for CNF and PF modified films is mainly caused by nanofibril deposition and their mesostructure. However, addition of PF modifier has a positive effect on the constraint of water absorption and thickness swelling, which is strongly dependent on PF loadings.

In this paper,the new bamboo-based consolidated composite floors were fabricated with thin bamboo veneers which used as decoration layers,wear resistant layers,high density fiberboards and equilibrium layers through assembling and scuffing.The effect rules of the composite floor on properties were preliminarily studied by three factors:hot-pressing temperature,pressure and time.The results showed that the wear resistance and surface bond strength of the thin bamboo veneer consolidated composite floor significantly increased with the rise of hot-pressing temperature.In the scope of resources,the effect of hot-pressing pressure and time on properties of the floor is not significant.The optimizing technology is hot-pressing temperature 170℃,pressure 3MPa and time 40s/mm in this study.The thin bamboo veneer consolidated composite floor is an excellent floor decorative material,which has good physical and mechanical properties.

The occurrence of an interactive effect between warp and weft of woven fabrics under practical working conditions is an important concern for researchers. A novel 3D loading device has therefore been developed to elucidate information on materials subjected to loadings in multiple dimensions. This paper investigated the interactive effects between warp and weft in biaxial tension. Strain fields were characterized by digital speckle correlation method and Poisson’s ratio was calculated at 0° in the warp direction. The effects of different cutting angles and loading threshold values at 0° on the interactive effect were also evaluated. An interactive effect between warp and weft existed, and the influence of load at weft to warp was larger than warp to weft. Weft produced larger strain fields in both directions. As the load in the warp direction linearly increased, force values nonlinearly increased while load ratio decreased. Poisson’s ratio, however, was practically unchanged. Loading mean value curves at x and y axes had sine curve characteristics. The greatest interactive effect occurred when the warp load was 65.3% of the biaxial breaking strength.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of oxalic acid (OA) pretreatment on carbohydrates released from rice straw particles and wood chips. The results showed that OA treatment accelerated carbohydrates extraction from rice straw particles and wood chips. OA pretreatment dramatically increased the amount of carbohydrates extracted, up to 24 times for wood chips and 2.3 times for rice straw particles. Sugars released from the OA-treated rice straw particles and wood chips increased with increasing treatment temperature and duration. OA treatment also improved the primary physical properties of rice straw particleboard and wooden medium density fiberboard (MDF), except for the mechanical strength of MDF. Carbohydrates extracted from rice straw particles and wood chips could be a potential sustainable resource for biofuel or biobased chemicals.
