As discussed above, the main contributing factor for the premature failures in this section was poor base/subgrade support. When coupled with heavy truck traffic volume and water intrusion from nearby embankment, the conventional FDR would not address the reoccurring failures. To improve the performance of FDR in JCP with poor base/subgrade support, an innovative FDR with two layers of steel reinforcements and tie bars to adjacent JCPs were proposed and implemented by the responsible district.
