The fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) are important for the fiber sensing systems. The high-quality FBGs were inscribed by picosecond laser direct writing method in single-mode fiber for the first time. The mechanism of refractive index (RI) modulation in fiber by picosecond laser was revealed by Raman spectra and the results show that the RI modulation is mainly caused by the increase of fictive temperature.
